Pinpointing your site to a specific keyword helps the search engines do their job better, and they reward you for it by giving your site a higher ranking in the results page.

With that being the case, the more properly written links with specific keywords you have floating around on the web, the more votes your site gets for being relevant for that keyword. The more relevance, the higher up the results page. Quantity matters. But so does quality.
